Fredric A. “Fred” Bengtson, 74, of Lancaster, NY, originally of Jamestown, passed away peacefully with his wife by his side on June 19, 2024, at Buffalo General Hospital, after a long battle with cancer. He was born in Jamestown, a son of the late Earl and Elizabeth (Sandquist) Bengtson. He moved to Liverpool, NY in 1994 and then to Lancaster, NY in 2013.
Fred was a 1967 graduate of Jamestown High School and later earned an associate degree in accounting from Jamestown Community College. He began working in his parents’ store, Bengtson Grocery at the age of 2, thanking customers, and continued working there through high school. In 1970, he started working for Quality Markets in the Jamestown area, holding several positions but mostly serving as a Buyer. His position was relocated in 1994 to P&C Foods in Syracuse, NY, where he worked until his retirement in 2010.
His sharp wit and playful sense of humor drew people to him. If you knew Fred well, you couldn’t help but like him. He loved spending time with his family, especially his four grandsons. He enjoyed leisure time at his Bourne’s Beach cottage on Lake Erie, where he also served as a board member. Fred was an avid golfer, netting a hole-in-one at age 14, and was a former member of Jackson Valley Country Club. He was also an excellent bowler, earning a varsity letter in high school, and bowling in several different leagues as an adult. He was a longtime member of the Lakewood Rod and Gun Club and Moose Fraternity Westfield Lodge 118. He was an ardent sports fan, rooting for his beloved New York Yankees, Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres. His passion for sports was on full display when he won a contest to name the Jefferson “Jaguars” many years ago. Fred was fond of strategy games and solving crossword and sudoku puzzles and was a voracious reader of both fiction and nonfiction.
Surviving is his wife of 53 years, Jana Norgren Bengtson, whom he married February 13, 1971; his children, Megan Bengtson Key (Matthew) of Denver, CO, and Michael Bengtson (Sherrie) of Lancaster, NY; four grandchildren, Reed and Trent Bengtson of Lancaster, and Judson and Samuel Key of Denver; his sister, Ann Gengo (Francis) of Williamsville, NY; his sister-in-law, Karen Carlson (late Lee) of Jamestown, NY; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, George Bengtson; an aunt, Mary Jane Kidd (Pat); and a cousin, Ralph Bengtson, whom he called “Uncle Ralph.”
