March 9, 2014 of Cheektowaga, NY. Beloved husband of Mary F. “Setsuko” (nee Izutsu) Hirtzel; dearest father of Midori (Christopher) Hirtzel-Church and Mayumi (Seth Frisbie-Fulton) Hirtzel; brother of Alma (Richard) Hammer and Sue Hirtzel; also survived by nieces and nephews. Family will be present to receive relatives and friends on Thursday from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. at the MELVIN J. SLIWINSKI FUNERAL HOME 85 George Urban Blvd. (west of Harlem Rd.) where funeral services will be held on Friday at 9:00 a.m. and from Queen of Martyrs Church at 9:30 a.m. Interment Our Lady Help of Christians Cemetery. Joseph was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War, volunteer at Sisters of Charity Hospital, St. Joseph Campus, active member of Mended Hearts, US-TOO and a retiree of Eastern Airlines, working both its first flight out of Buffalo and its last flight into Buffalo.
